Content writers can be a valuable resource for a variety of reasons. As such, you might want to avoid these tips when working with your freelance writing contact.
1) Provide an extremely broad topic
While many content writers have experience with researching topics and writing niche posts, providing a broad topic such as “blogging” and asking for a 600 word article will frustrate even the most patient of writers. If you’re working with a content writer, give them a general direction and then, if need be, ask for topic suggestions. Have terms in mind such as “tips on article marketing” or “writing funny posts” to make things go smoothly.
2) Don’t pay on time
Writing articles takes time and effort, and if you’re working with a content writer who offers a quality service, not paying in a timely manner is a serious offense. Just as with any other service, payment is important to the service provider. Even if you have a writer on retainer, it’s important that all of your payments come promptly. It’s their job after all!
3) Give unreasonable deadlines
While many content writers have an excellent turn-around time, unreasonable deadlines will turn off your content writer very quickly. Remember that time differences and random life occurrences can interfere with work, so providing at least 24 hours for turn around time is a reasonable deadline.
4) Criticize the Style of the Articles
You should never just hire “any old writer.” Every content writer has his or her own distinct style. Whereas some writers will write long sentences and employ lots of imagery, others will write short, crisp sentences with a slightly ironic style of speaking. Criticizing a content writer’s style will not get them to change it, because style is something that comes inherently.
5) Do Not Give Formatting Details or Important Information at the Start
This is probably the worst thing you can do for a content writer. If you have a press release you want written, providing company background information and contact information is a must. If you want a post written in a particular format, or if you have information you want to include, you should provide it at the start.
Learning how to work with content writers is an invaluable resource for anyone looking to manage projects that will require outsourcing. Following these guidelines will ensure that you build a lasting relationship with your writer.
